DIFFICULTIES OF REPAIR

THINGS TO WATCH FOR THAT MAKE SMOKE ALARM DETECTORS TRICKY TO WORK ON

  • Smoke alarm detectors all work differently. Even smoke detectors created by the same manufacturer do not work the same. Each model number can be unique in its operation. Each generation of models can also be unique in its operation.
  • Smoke alarm detectors are most often interconnected. This means that while just one of the devices causes the alarm, all of the detectors create the general alarm sound.
  • It is not unusual to be missing the instruction manual for your particular smoke alarm detectors. Unfortunately, in regard to smoke alarm detectors the instruction manual is important to have.
  • Some smoke alarm detectors will chirp when power is interrupted and when power is restored. Some will not.
  • Your smoke alarm detectors can be of many types, often depending on what year your home was built.

TYPES OF SMOKE DETECTORS

Smoke detectors can be powered and operated differently, often depending on what National Fire Alarm Code was in effect when your home was built. Your detectors will fall into one or more of the following categories:
  1. Battery powered only
  2. Powered only by the electrical wiring in your residence
  3. Powered by the electrical wiring in your residence along with battery backup
  4. Interconnected through the electrical wiring in your residence so that when one device creates an alarm, all of the devices sound the general alarm
